The exclusive and bourgeoisie epicenter of New York’s art scene with a hip vibe
The center of Manhattan’s contemporary art scene, Chelsea, boasts over 200 galleries and art spaces. Artists and musicians have been flocking to the neighborhood since Andy Warhol and Bob Dylan lived in the ritzy Chelsea Hotel in the 1960s. When The High Line opened in 2009, it was with a dedicated art program to use the public space for murals, sculptures, and exhibitions. Soon, luxury high-rise condominiums were built along the main streets overlooking the High Line. 520 West 28th Street, designed by the late Zaha Hadid, features a triplex penthouse, an entertainment suite, an IMAX theater, an outdoor pool, and a state-of-the-art fitness center.
The row of historic Greek Revival houses on Cushman Row have been updated into multi-unit condominiums. Old warehouses have been converted to modern residential and commercial spaces. The interiors were redesigned to house restaurants, nightclubs, and galleries. Some are now modern upscale lofts with open floor plans, high ceilings, skylights, and enclosed terraces.
Gallery openings and changing exhibitions give Chelsea a hip and artsy vibe. It’s not as touristy as other parts of Manhattan, but you’ll see artists from all over checking out the galleries on 10th and 11th Avenue. Because of its thriving food scene and nightlife, New Yorkers like to congregate here after work and party late into the night.
Chelsea has a diverse selection of over 500 restaurants. Chelsea Market alone covers an entire city block and is packed with food stalls and specialty stores. Los Mariscos is a bustling counter offering a raw bar and Mexican seafood dishes. Friedman’s is a local favorite for breakfast and lunch.
Miznon is famous for their Mediterranean stuffed pitas. If you’re craving seafood, Lobster Place has sushi and chowders, and of course lobster. For more upscale dining, Buddakan features Asian fusion dishes in a lavishly decorated setting and Old Homestead Steakhouse is considered one of the best steakhouses in the city.
By The High Line, Cookshop has a greenmarket-driven menu with American fare. It’s also a popular brunch spot. The Mermaid Inn has a raw bar and seafood-centric menu. Calle Dao serves hearty portions of unique Chinese-Cuban fusion dishes. For fine dining, Bottino specializes in Tuscan dishes with boutique wines to pair.
You’ll also find fantastic restaurants along Eighth Avenue. Willow Vegan Bistro is a vegan restaurant serving homestyle dishes. Jack’s Wife Freda is an American Mediterranean restaurant that’s popular for their casual atmosphere and breakfast dishes. Dim Sum Chelsea offers dim sum plus rice and noodle dishes in a casual eatery and Chelsea Ristorante Italiano is a white-tablecloth restaurant featuring homemade pastas.
Even though it can get touristy, The High Line is a public green space beloved by residents. You can stroll along the elevated 1.5-mile walkway with viewpoints of different parts of the city. The 10th Avenue Square Overlook has amphitheater seating looking out to the street below. There are garden zones, murals, and wellness programs accessible to the whole community.
At Chelsea Piers, you’ll find over 25 sports facilities. This 28-acre complex includes event spaces and a maritime center. You can catch a dance troupe or ballet performance at The Joyce Theater, which hosts shows year-round. On Saturdays, the Down to Earth Chelsea Farmers’ Market sells locally-sourced foods and produce.
Chelsea is served by New York City Public Schools.
