New Construction in the Lower East Side

The Lower East Side of Manhattan, always vibrant, always diverse, holds some of the richest culture and history of New York City. Famous national affinity neighborhoods, such as Little Italy and Chinatown, are found here, and some long-standing tenement buildings stand as silent tributes to the countless immigrants who have made New York City their new home. Here they found a sanctuary and created a new life and legacy for their families after fleeing the troubles and hardships of the old world. Riverfront land that was first settled as Dutch farms in the 17th century eventually developed into a shipbuilding center, followed by an immigrant enclave, and today stands as a hip, modern community with one eye toward preserving its history and the other straining forward to embrace the future.

It seems strange, perhaps, to be talking about new construction in an area that was “built out” over 100 years ago, but as outmoded and declining structures are razed and replaced with sleek, sophisticated new apartment buildings and condominium complexes, Lower East Side property continues the New York tradition of creating innovative commerce and development to make way for the ever-shifting, ever elevating New York skyline.

What does the Lower East Side offer?

Residents of the Lower East Side (LES) love the diversity of cultures and nationalities they find here. The blend of past and present tells the story of a city with rich history and invites all who wish to write their own chapter. LES offers a vibrant nightlife, with live music venues, restaurants, and coffee shops. It’s also an excellent place for families. Other areas of the city are easily accessible from this location on the East River, making it a great area to call home no matter where you work in the city.

Popular neighborhood attractions are as diverse as the community itself. Rockwood Music Hall demonstrates an uncanny knack for recognizing the next big musical star, and live shows are sure to entertain. History enthusiasts can relive the story of LES at the Tenement Museum, which immortalizes the immigrants who toiled to become Americans. The New Museum celebrates all things “new” in the arts. And, of course, one must not forget the long-standing, historic eateries, such as Katz’s Deli, Russ and Daughters, and Essex Market.

Out with the old and up with the new

Lower East Side property is developing just as rapidly as permits can be issued, and the cityscape is evolving right before our eyes. It is an exciting time for the neighborhood, with the sights and sounds of construction everywhere throughout the community.  Whether the project is senior housing at 64 Norfolk, New Museum expansion on Bowery, or the finishing touches being added to a residential tower on Suffolk Street, signs of growth and revitalization are everywhere. As it always has, the Lower East Side is growing, adapting, and changing with the resiliency of a true New Yorker. Just ask real estate agent Josh Carter. He’s spent a lifetime watching Lower East Side’s metamorphosis.
